Dog thefts are an horrendous crime. Dogs are part of a persons family. Part of their household. When a dog is stolen it is like a kidnapping. however, the law only treats it similar to a theft of a bicycle. Dogs are only regarded as 'property' in the law but all dog owners know different.
the law clearly lags behind society in this. only M.P's can change the law but as a Police Commissioner I can at least dedicate a liaison so that the trade in stolen dogs for selling or for used as baiting for dog fighting can be hindered. There should be a National perspective on this and as no-one seems to have come up with it i am happy to spearhead it.
a national stolen dog data base should be set uo and information shared across the country.
At the moment it is done haphazardly and is reliant on the press to release details of the dogs found. Often theI/D chip is removed but even it is wasn't there are 15 databases to check.
een at it, and what got them to where they are.
